TOP OF CHAPTER
Lamego
POP 26,690 / ELEV 550M
Most people come to Lamego - a prim, prosperous town 10km south of the Rio Douro -
to see (and possibly to climb) the astonishing baroque stairway that zigzags its way up to
the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. The old town centre itself has a mix of wind-
ing narrow lanes and tree-lined boulevards, with uplit medieval landmarks looming from
almost every angle. Connoisseurs also swear by Lamego's raposeira, the town's famously
fragrant sparkling wine, which provides a fine break between bouts of port.
