Eating & Drinking
Around the corner from the turismo is Praça José Régio, a rather ugly modern plaza in the
middle of the quaint old town. Here, there's an assortment of outdoor cafes, bars and res-
taurants, and on weekends pop-up bars sprout to serve sugary caparinhas to the masses.
Adega Gavina
(Rua Cais das Lavandeiras 56; meals €5-7; lunch & dinner Mon-Sat) The top choice in town offers tre-
mendous roast-chicken lunches for a song, and cooks some damn good steaks, but first
and foremost it's a seafood grill. Step one: stroll into the kitschy interior and peruse the
chalkboard menu. Step two: choose your catch and watch the chef grill it perfectly on his
streetside barbecue. Excellent value lunch specials (€5 to €7) come with potatoes, rice and
steamed greens.
SEAFOOD
O Canghalho
(Rua Cais das Lavandeiras 48; meals €10-15; lunch & dinner Mon-Sat) The funky, tricked-out vintage
Land Rover parked out front may catch your eye, and as you come close you'll notice the
stylish bistro interior and fresh fish on ice. Great style, great vibe, tasty seafood.
SEAFOOD €€
Restaurante Le
Villageois
(Praça da República 94; meals €9-18; lunch & dinner Tue-Sun) The popular Villageois has been pre-
paring terrific steaks and fresh seafood in French-Portuguese style since 1977. The airy
dining room is appointed with azulejos, the appealing sun-drenched patio is classy and the
bar is full. It hosts live fado on Friday and Saturday nights.
FRENCH-PORTUGUESE €€
Caximar
( www.restaurantecaximar.pai.pt ; Av Brasil; mains €9-16; lunch & dinner Tue-Sun) For tasty seafood in a
modern, unfussy place with tables overlooking the crashing waves, head to the beach,
1km west of Forte São João Baptista.
SEAFOOD €€
Cacau
(Praca de Republica 42; 9am-2am) Running deep into the hollowed-out ground floor of an old
stone relic, Cacau is a cafe by day and a bar by night, with electro-funky tunes and a
young crowd.
