Afurada
Taberna São Pedro
(Rua Agostinho Albaño 84, Afurada; mains €6-10; lunch daily, dinner Mon-Sat)
Fado scales the
azulejo
walls, toddlers tear through the dining room, plump and oily sardines (and other fresh
fish) are roasted on pavement grills, and you can almost smell the tart snap of
vinho verde
in the air. There's much to love in this forever-packed, salt-of-the-earth local seafood
house. It's located one block inland from the ferry pier.

Foz do Douro
Casa de Pasto
da Palmeira
(Rua do Passeio Alegre 450; mains €6.30-13.70; lunch & dinner Tue-Sun)
An adorable eatery right on
the waterfront with two small colourful rooms featuring contemporary artwork and a few
tables on the front patio. The creative small-size dishes change daily - think hake and
shrimp
moqueca
with banana and coriander, and
alheira
rolls with turnip sprouts. A cool
local find.

Bar Tolo
( 224 938 987; Rua Senhora da Luz 185; mains €10-17)
A fun little spot in a tall, narrow, sky-blue
corner building, with a tiny rooftop terrace sporting an ocean view, a rustic-chic vibe and
a menu of creative
petiscos
and mains.
Shis
( 226 189 593;
www.shisrestaurante.com
; Praia do Ourigo; mains €20-25; lunch & dinner)
Perched above
the thrashing sea is this fashionable white dining room with funky Chinese lanterns,
Eames chairs and lighthouse views. The sushi bar is very good, and so are the creative
mains, such as duck ravioli and tuna with balsamic-infused teriyaki sauce. There's also a
cafe, if you don't want to splurge.
