little-known gem for lighter fare in the cafe downstairs (good-value weekday lunch spe-

( 917 953 387; Rua do Aviz 10; mains €10.50-23) One of Porto's hottest tables, this place has a lib-
rary theme and buzzes with a mix of well-heeled locals and tourists. The decor is a mix of
industrial and classic, and dishes are modern takes on Portuguese mainstays, like baked
kid goat with turnip greens, and partridge pie with a ginger and orange sauce. Service can
be slow. Book ahead.
Escondidinho

( www.escondidinho.com.pt ; Rua Passos Manuel 144; mains €15-28; lunch & dinner) Amid azulejos, dark
wood furnishings and starched white place settings, Escondidinho serves solid traditional
cuisine to a mainly tourist clientele, hence the slightly inflated prices. Chefs here combine
fresh ingredients and a wood-burning oven to create classic dishes.
