inside a restored 18th- century riverside building celebrates all things port. In addition to a
shop where tastings are held (€5 for three ports), there are exhibition halls, a rooftop ter-
race with panoramic views and the DeCastro Gaia restaurant on the third floor, with
renowned chef Miguel Castro Silva.

Watching over all is this severe 17th-century hilltop church, with its striking circular
cloister. Requisitioned by the future Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular War
(1807-14), it still belongs to the Portuguese military and is closed to the public. The
church is open for Mass every Sunday morning from 10am to noon.

original British-founded Gaia wine caves, recently renovated and now boasting a small
museum, Graham's is a popular choice for tours, which include a tasting of three reserve
wines. The brand-new Vinum restaurant (Rua do Agro 141; mains €16-29) has incredible views from
the terrace - it's worth the splurge.

from the river, British-run Taylor's boasts lovely, oh-so-English grounds with fine views
of Porto. Its one-hour tours include a tasting of three top-of-the-range wines - your reward
for the short huff uphill.

Pinto and take a look at its historic offices and ageing cellars. The basic tour includes a
visit to the museum plus a port tasting with chocolates. Tours are offered in several lan-
guages.
