Palácio de Cristal to Foz do Douro
Palácio de Cristal and, beyond it, the suburb of Foz do Douro, are both to the west of the
city centre along the Douro. While it can get jumping on weekends, Foz do Douro is often
peaceful on weekdays, especially if wisps of fog blow in off the Atlantic, bathing the
cobbled upper reaches in cool mist.
Museu dos Transportes
MUSEUM
(

;
Rua Nova da Alfândega; adult/student €3/1.50; 10am-1pm & 2-6pm Tue-Fri, 3-7pm Sat & Sun)
Set in the gorgeous 19th-century riverside customs house, this museum traces the motor
car from its inception to the future. It does the same for radio and telecommunication.
Museu do Vinho do Porto
MUSEUM
(Port Wine Museum; Rua de Monchique 45; admission €2.20, weekends free; 10am-5.30pm Tue-Sat,
10am-12.30pm & 2-5.30pm Sun)
Down by the river in a remodelled warehouse, this modest mu-
seum explores the impact of the famous tipple on the region's history in a series of largely
interactive displays, though it doesn't offer much insight into the wine itself.
Jardim do Palácio de Cristal
(Rua Dom Manuel II; 8am-9pm Apr-Oct, 8am-7pm Nov-Mar)
Sitting atop bluffs just west of Porto's
old centre, this leafy park is home to a domed sports pavilion, the hi-tech Biblioteca Mu-
nicipal Almeida Garrett and pleasant tree-lined footpaths with fantastic river views.
