In the pretty heart of the old town, this noble building with an intriguingly varied history
is now a fabulous hostel, chock-full of modern comforts and facilities while maintaining a
period feel in keeping with this historic zone. Great lounge areas, a cute secluded sun ter-
race, several computers, spacious dorms, friendly staff and a modern kitchen complete a
very happy picture. Prices are often lower than listed here.

This friendly family-run

in the heart of the eating district has had a major upgrade, with a modern wing
tacked on. The old rooms are perhaps a touch larger and still look very good, while the
newer ones have a clean-line Nordic feel; all have lots of light. The views over rooftops
and up to the old town, or down to the river, are a highlight, so try to get a room on the
3rd floor if possible. There's a great family room available too, and a downstairs restaur-
ant.

This irre-
proachably kept guest house is a 15-minute stroll from the centre through the botanic gar-
dens and boasts friendly staff and elegantly sparse rooms, including some family suites.
Rooms vary in size - some are very spacious, with newly fitted bathrooms. The overall
package is excellent, there's easy street parking around the corner, and double -paned
glass to keep out street noise.

Right
on the old town's 'back-breaking' stairs, this isn't easy to find but makes a good central
haven, though you won't be able to park too close. It's an apartment with four rooms dec-
orated with attractive fabrics that give the place an optimistic feel. Two share a bathroom
(another has exterior private bathroom) and there's a kitchen and book exchange. It's reas-
onably well soundproofed so those noisy students won't disturb your rest. Don't be put off
by the dingy staircase.
