from the old town, this place is constantly being improved by the couple that run it. Prices
are excellent for this level of comfort, and some of the spot-on rooms have balconies and
wonderful views over the river and up to the castle. The roof terrace is a super spot on a
sunny day.

street in the historic centre, this dignified place has a great location and small but decent
rooms with double-glazing to keep out street noise. There's a retro appeal to its marble
steps, tiled hallways and parquet wood floors. It's heated but can still be cold in winter,
when rates are much cheaper, but don't include breakfast.

GUESTHOUSE, HOSTEL
( 244 812 802; www.hostelleiria.com ; Rua Dr Correia Mateus 30; dm €18-20, s/d €35/45; ) In a
characterful 1920s blue building on a very central corner, this is part-guesthouse, part-
hostel and a curious mixture of old and new. The elegance of public areas extends to the
spacious private rooms, some of which have balconies. Dorms are essentially the same,
except with bunks; all have en-suite bathroom. There's no kitchen, and, though there's a
lounge and bar, don't expect a hostel atmosphere. The 'doormat' staircase means no street
mud.
