In the
square right next to the abbey, friendly older proprietor Dona Eglantina runs this snug but
attractive place. It's got a vaguely alpine feel, with flower-filled window boxes and spot-
less, modern rooms tucked under the eaves. Some upstairs rooms overlook the equestrian
statue in the abbey square. You'll probably pick up the wi-fi signal from the free council
zone outside.

One
of our favourite hotels in central Portugal, this excellent place would be worth a detour
even if there wasn't a monastery looming in plain view of some of the rooms. This place
feels in parts like a casual contemporary gallery - stylish and colourful, with the owners'
original artworks decorating the rooms and passageways. Rooms are modern, commodi-
ous and attractive, and all a little different.
Balconies, coffee-tray and minifridge are standard, as is the excellent breakfast with
homemade jams and a welcome drink on arrival. And did we mention the sizeable swim-
ming pool, minigym and pool table? A standout.

ler church near the monastery, this simple, friendly place serves excellent grilled meat and
other Portuguese standards. Grab half a chicken for €6.50 and go home happy.

Sleek
and stylish, this wine bar serves delicious tapas and full meals along with an amazing ar-
ray of Portuguese wines displayed all around the modern dining area. Food is contempor-
ary and innovative, and reliably excellent. Service, particularly from the sommelier, is
very helpful.
