Tucked away inside the walls in the lower part of town - bear right as you enter
the main gate - is this most enticing option with an excellent restaurant. Rooms are just
lovely, with a classy, restrained elegance that evokes a bygone age without laying it on.
Most have cute balconies looking at the walls: these can be your venue for breakfast if
you choose. Little touches like an honesty bar plus fruit and homemade liqueur chocolates
in the rooms add charm.

It's all medieval here, with suits of armour, shields riveted to the walls and staff in tunics,
but modern comforts aren't lacking. Just outside the town walls, this is an atmospheric
and well-equipped aristocratic dwelling converted to a small upmarket hotel. Rooms are
spacious and commodious, and the summertime pool is great, as is the four-poster suite.

Eating & Drinking
In touristy Óbidos, restaurants are generally long on atmosphere but short on value. The
larger hotels, including the Pousada do Castelo

have good, but pricey, dining rooms.
Senhor da Pedra

Behind the striking church of Senhor da Pedra
below town, this simple white-tiled eatery (the one on the right as you look at the row of
restaurants) is a recommended place to try low-priced authentic Portuguese cuisine. It's a
classic affair with Mum in the kitchen, and Dad and the boy on tables. The name isn't
signed - it just says 'Snack Bar', but if these are snacks, we'd hate to see what they con-
sider a full meal.

windows overlooking the town features creative dishes such as
requinte de bacalhau
(cod
with cheese, chestnuts and apples). It's better than most of the main street options.
