In-Depth Information
(Rua Vasco da Gama 81; mains €6-14; lunch & dinner) This simple place on a narrow street parallel
to Largo da Ribeira does a roaring trade with locals and tourists alike. They can be a little
pushy if you're walking by on the street but once inside things improve, and the fixed-
price menu, featuring soup, bread, main course, dessert, wine and coffee, is a great deal at
€7.50.
Restaurante Popular
( 262 790 290; Largo da Ribeira 40; mains €8-12; lunch & dinner Tue-Sun) This harbourside spot
serves up really excellent seafood in a luminous, glassy light area. It's a great place offer-
ing top value. The tasty daily specials reflect what's been caught locally - the espetos
(skewers) of mixed fish are very tasty.

Katekero II
( www.feriaskatekero.com ; Av do Mar 68-70; mains €8-13; lunch & dinner Wed-Mon) One of several res-
taurants forming a long strip near the harbour, this attractive and welcoming place serves
good seafood without an excessive price tag, including an excellent seafood rice. Its land-
based plates are also recommended, with particularly tasty pork dishes.

Nau dos Corvos
( 262 783 168; www.naudoscorvos.com ; Marginal Norte, Cabo Carvoeiro; mains €17-22; lunch & dinner) It's
just you and the sea out here at Cabo Carvoeiro, 2.5km from the centre of town at the tip
of the peninsula. But as you gaze out at the Atlantic from the windy platform, it's nice to
know that under your feet is an excellent seafood restaurant. With some of the best sunset
views in Portugal, and great plates to share, it's a romantic, upmarket place to dine.

Drinking & Nightlife
The area around Igreja de São Pedro is the old town's drinking hub (think four walls, cold
beer and a home stereo system). For nightlife, you're really better off in Baleal, where
you'll find several laid-back surfer bars right on the beach.
Java House
(Largo da Ribeira 14; 9am-3am Mon-Thu, 9am-4am Fri & Sat; ) The most popular joint in town,
this deals in everything from early-morning coffees to sandwiches and crêpes. The lights
dim later in the evening, and DJs strut their stuff. The cocktails and mixed drinks are let
down by the service, but the terrace and the exposed rock interior are atmospheric.
