WORTH A TRIP
PORTO CÔVO
Worth popping in for a visit (though not to linger if you're short of time; it gets packed in summer) is the appeal-
ingly 'traditional cute' Porto Côvo. Perched on low cliffs with views over the sea, Porto Côvo (population around
1000) is a former fishing village with a pretty square and cobbled streets lined with sun-bleached houses.
Paths along the cliffs lead down to the harbour at the town's southern end and to interesting rock formations to
the north, with access to various beaches such as the pretty Praia do Somouqueira . If you want to really let
loose, head to the official 'nudie' beach, Praia do Salto .
The turismo ( 269 959 124; 9am-noon & 1-5pm Mon-Fri winter, 10am-1pm & 3-7pm Mon-Sat sum-
mer) is on the edge of the old town, one block north of the main square by a car park. Diving trips can be ar-
ranged through Ecoalga ( 964 620 394; www.ecoalga.com ) . In summer, a boat shuttles between Porto Côvo
and the diminutive island of Ilha do Pessegueiro (Fishermen's Island).
Overlooking the quaint square is Cervejaria Marquês ( 269 905 036; Largo Marquês de Pombal 10;
mains €12-19; lunch & dinner Wed-Mon) , overwhelmingly the favourite place to eat.
At least one Rede Expressos bus (more in summer) travels to/from Lisbon each day (€15.20, 2¾ hours). In
summer there are regular connections to Vila Nova de Milfontes (€6, 25 minutes).
