Lower Town
On the fringes of the Rossio are imposing old churches, former convents and, just north of
the square, monastic buildings converted into cavalry barracks OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP . Op-
posite these, by Largo General Graça, is a marble-edged water tank, called the Lago do
Gadanha OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Lake of the Scythe) after its scythe-wielding statue of Nep-
tune. Some of the prettiest marble streets in town are south of the Rossio, off Largo da
República.
