Festa de Nosso Senhor
Jésus dos Passos
Bullfights and processions feature in this festival, held around the second weekend of
September.
VILLAGE
Sleeping
Some villagers have converted their ancient cottages to guesthouses, most of which are
along Rua Direita. Make sure you book ahead in high season.
Casa Pinto
( 266 557 076; www.casapinto.net ; Praça Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira 10; d €75-115; ) A touch of
class and the downright quirky hits Monsaraz. Each of the five rooms - decorated by the
Spanish owner-interior designer - has a theme based around former Portuguese colonies,
from Macau to Mombasa. We're talking themed touches, from a waterfall shower (Dili) to
elephant tusks (Asilah, Morocco - no, the tusks are not real) and much more besides. Fab-
ulous terrace views and pleasant living spaces.

Casa Saramago de Monsaraz
( 266 557 494; www.casasaramago-monsaraz.com.pt ; Telheiro; r €65; ) Based in Telheiro, at
the foot of Monsaraz, this delightfully converted blue and white quinta is great value for
money. Rooms are tastefully decorated in old-style - but not too twee - f urniture. The
Portuguese owners are friendly and accommodating. Rooms in the former celeiros (silos)
have verandahs and face Monsaraz. Four-legged friends are welcome, too - a horse hotel
and cão (dog) kennels are on the premises.
RURAL INN €€
Casa Dona Antónia
( 266 557 142; www.casadantonia-monsaraz.com ; Rua Direita 15; d €60-75, ste €90; ) The eight rooms
in this traditional house vary in size, but all are pleasant and comfortable; the suite is huge
and includes a terrace.
B&B €€
St Condestável
( 266 557 181; www.condestavel-monsaraz.com ; Rua Direita 4; r/ste €55/80; ) This old place has
five cool rooms (great when the mercury hits 40°C). Decor errs on the masculine (it lacks
a bit of colour), with wooden finishings. Subtract €5 per person if you don't want break-
fast.
