Mon-Fri; lunch Sat; ) Vegetarians (and Portuguese pigs) will be thanking the owner for this
veggie-popping paradise. Pedro, the owner, gives a wonderful twist to traditional Alente-
jan dishes (the famous bread dish, migas , is prepared with mushrooms). Don't be put off
by the eatery's cafeteria-like appearance; come here for the food - all locally sourced
fresh products and olive oil are used.

(Rua do Cicioso 47; pastries from €2; 7.30am-8pm) Out of the centre, but still within the walls, this
delightful spot specialises in convent cakes, all made on the premises from recipes that
originated in the local convents. Don't miss the pão de rala (we'll let you find out what it
is) - it's sweet stuff (and wonderfully sinful).

( 266 746 775; Rua da Mouraria 16a; mains €13-16.50; lunch & dinner Mon-Fri, lunch Sat) Local gastro-
nomes believe this is Évora's culinary shrine. Poke around the old Moorish quarter to find
this cosy spot serving some of Évora's finest food and wine (the owner currently stocks
more than 150 wines from the Alentejo alone). There are no reservations, just 12 stools at
a counter. The owner will cook customer by customer according to their (and often his!)
whim.
