MARKET MANIA
Look out for local specialities - warm woollens, brassware and Moorish- influenced ceramics - at the region's
many markets. Check with tourist offices before you visit as days do change.

Odeceixe
Around here the countryside rucks up into rolling, large hills. As the Algarve turns into
the Alentejo, the last coastal settlement is Odeceixe, an endearing small town clinging to
the southern side of the Ribeira de Seixe valley, and so snoozy it's in danger of falling off,
except during high season, when Portuguese and European visitors pack the place.
The sheltered
Praia de Odeceixe
, 3.5km down the valley, is a wonderful bite of sand sur-
rounded by gorse- and tree-covered cliffs.
Odeceixe Surf School
( 963 170 493;

; 1-/3-/5-day courses €55/150/225)
offers surfing classes (and board and
wetsuit rental) - look for its signs on the beach.
Sleeping & Eating
There are a handful of unofficial, but well-advertised
quartos
(private rooms) in the vil-
lage, especially along Rua Nova (en route to the beach). Expect to pay at least €35 to €40
for a double.
Several pleasant eateries are around Largo 1 Mai, a great spot to sit and watch the
world amble by, and on Rua Estrada Nacional, the road into town. On the way to the
beach there are a couple of restaurants, and at the beach there are snack-bars competing
for hungry beachgoers.
