LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
WALKING IN THE ALGARVE
Ana Carla Cabrita is a walking guide with Walkin'Sagres ( Click here ).
Why do you like walking in the Algarve region? For many reasons! The region has a lot of untouched nature.
You can walk long distances with the feeling of being on your own, without another soul. You also meet elderly,
local people, see typical houses, get a sense of traditions. The feeling of being back in time is amazing!
What fauna and flora should travellers look out for when they are walking in the Algarve? From August to
October, Sagres is the best place to look for raptors, vultures and the rare Black Stork just to name a few. In
spring, flowers are everywhere, including wild orchids. Sagres' Biogenetic Reserve is protected because of its
many endemic plants, such as Biscutella Vicentina and Ulex erinaceus .
Can you share your favourite 'secret' walking spot in the Algarve? This one is difficult! North of Aljezur, in
Rogil, there's a small but really special walk - near local farms, clifftop sand dunes and an amazingly diverse
flora. (Follow the ''Esteveira' sign.) And at Serra do Caldeirão ( Click here ) , on the northeast Algarve, there are
some marked walks around the small villages of Caixas Baixas and Mealha.
