Silves
POP 11,000
Silves is an attractive town of jumbling orange rooftops scattered above the banks of the
Rio Arade. It boasts one of the best-preserved castles in the Algarve, attractive red-stone
walls and winding, sleepy backstreets on a hillside. Not much happens around town, but
it's a good base if you're after a less hectic, noncoastal Algarvian pace. Around Silves,
there are some lovely rural accommodation options. It's 15km northeast of Portimão.
The train station is located 2km south of town, but you'll need to catch a cab as it's
along a major highway.
