Quinta do Coração
( 289 489 959; www.algarveparadise.com ; Carrasqueiro; s/d €35/55, self-catering studio €60, 2-person cottage €65;
) The setting of this converted farmhouse, in Carrasqueiro (7km east of Salir) is lovely
- on a wooded hill, encircled by a eucalypt, olive-grove and cork-tree paradise. This ain't
your gleaming white-tiled experience; the rooms, studios and cottage (with kitchenette)
are rough-and-rustic, in a pleasant sort of way. The experience comes with a well-meaning
'touch of hippy'.
It's on the Via Algarviana.
GUESTHOUSE
Quinta do Freixo
( 289 472 185; www.quintadofreixo.org ; Benafim; s/d €48/65; Mar-Nov; ) This pleasant place - a
converted barn - is located on Quinta do Freixo, a functioning farm well-known for pro-
ducing traditional foodstuffs. Although a rural experience, accommodation errs on the
'moo', not the 'poo'; you can see animals from the comfortable communal areas, without
leaving the complex's green lawns and swimming pool.
The 10 comfortable rooms feature Alentejan (painted wooden) furniture. Popular with
small European groups. Travellers report unreliable opening months, however.
RURAL INN €€
Casa da Mãe
( 289 489 179; www.casadamae.com ; Almeijoafra; s €40-75, d/tr €70/85; ) This friendly unpreten-
tious complex offers a series of good-value, if slightly dated, rooms and apartments. It has
a lovely garden - with pool - and superb views of greenery and Salir in the distance.
Good breakfasts with homemade produce. The Via Algarviana passes close by.
