WALKS IN SERRA DO CALDEIRÃO
A walk well worth doing is
Rocha da Pena
, a limestone peak just east of Alte and off the N124. Walkers can do
a signed 4.7km circuit walk up the mountain; follow the road signs to the mountain. A return walk takes about
two to three hours. Carry water and snacks; there's a small shop-cafe at the base and another in Penina village but
no other refreshment stops for miles. Note fire-danger times - bushfires occur in this area.

Eating & Drinking
Cantina dos Sabores
(Rua de Portugal 22; lunch & dinner Mon-Sat; )
You might have to queue to get a place at this
buzzing vegetarian eatery alongside everyone from professionals to butch- looking meat-
eating guys. (OK, so it has chicken on the menu.) It's deservedly popular for its daily spe-
cials (around €6), juices and desserts. Generous portions are filling and enjoyable.

Churrasqueira Angolana
(Rua Nossa Senhora da Piedade 63; lunch & dinner)
It ain't pretty from the outside, but you don't
come here for the setting, nor for the service - it's brusque, busy and food-focussed. But
you'll get a decent grill here, from tuna steaks to chicken.

Espaços Gastronómicos Perdição
( 919 669 953; Rua Camilo Castelo Branco; mains €7-15; lunch Mon-Sat, dinner Thu-Sat; )
This place
lives up to its name: gastronomic delights in the form of daily vegetarian, fish, meat and
pasta dishes. Has a good selection of juices, teas and desserts, too.
