Several midrange eateries are clustered around Praça Ferreira de Almeida. They serve
similar fare in similar settings, mainly to travellers. Faro's big, daily mercado municipal
(municipal market) is in Largo Mercado.
Algartalhos (Largo do Carmo) and small Minipreço OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Praça Ferreira de Almeida

( 289 882 424; Travessa da Mota 10; buffet €7.50; lunch Mon-Sat; ) Give the taste buds a break
from meat and fish dishes and veg out (literally) at this Zenlike vegetarian restaurant. The
buffet changes daily; there may be vegetable lasagne, feijoada (bean casserole) and tofu
dishes.
VEGETARIAN
Pastelaria Coelho
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Brites de Almeida 2; mains €2-6; 7.30am-midnight) This has to be the most deceptive spot in Faro.
It looks like a pastelaria from the outside, yet inside, it morphs into a restaurant (the ad-
joining dining area gets packed to the gills) and serves up some hearty daily specials for a
Portuguese song. Think everything from xarém (maize meal with meat or fish) to turkey
stew for around €2 to €4 a plate. It's a favourite among the locals.
PORTUGUESE
Restaurante Chefe Branco
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Rua de Loulé 9/11A; €7.50-11.50; lunch & dinner) A fabulous local spot with a cosy feel and lots
of pot plants. The delightful staff serve honest, home-style fare including rabbit, goat and
seafood dishes. The half portions are the biggest this side of the Rio Tejo. Serves excellent
Algarvian desserts, too.
PORTUGUESE
Restaurante O Murta
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Rua Infante D Henrique 136; mains €8.50-9; lunch & dinner Mon-Sat) This simple place has been here
for 32 years so it must be doing something right. Chefs grill up fish and prepare excellent
seafood dishes such as açorda de marisco and the signature dish, bacalhau (cod prepared
with piri-piri, chilli).
