Saudade: the Portuguese Blues
The Portuguese psyche is a complicated thing, particularly when it comes to not easily
translatable concepts like
saudade
. In its purest form,
saudade
is the nostalgic, often
deeply melancholic longing for something: a person, a place or just about anything
that's no longer obtainable.
Saudade
is deeply connected to this seafaring nation's his-
tory and remains deeply intertwined with Portuguese identity. The elusive emotion
has played a starring role in some of Portugal's great works of art - in film, literature
and, most importantly, music.
