This offbeat museum displays
memorabilia related to the
artists of the Beat Generation,
who lived in San Francisco in
the 1950s. Photographs, books,
album covers, and letters line
the walls and floors of the
building. The museum hosts
events related to Beat culture,
while the shop sells a
fascinating range of books,
videos, T-shirts, and posters.

The steep climb from Little Italy
to the southermost summit of
Russian Hill reveals some of the
Upper Grant Avenue
Turn right into Grant Avenue

7 with its original 1861 bar.
On the corner of Vallejo Street
is Caffè Trieste 8 , the oldest
coffeehouse in San Francisco
and a genuine writers' and
artists' rendezvous since 1956.
Very much a part of Italian-
American culture, it offers live
opera on Saturday afternoons.
Follow Grant Avenue north
past Maggie
McGarry's Pub 9 ,
now an Irish Pub but
formerly the Coffee
Gallery, haunt of the
Beats. Turn left at
Green Street and
look for Columbus Café 0
and its exterior murals. Go left
at Columbus Avenue, and
follow this main North Beach
street south past many more
Italian coffee houses, to return
to your starting point.

runs along Columbus Ave.
Stopping-off points: All the

not usually allowed in bars.
