A Tour of the Presidio
The Presidio's lush landscaping belies its long
military history. This site has played a key role in
San Francisco's growth, and has been occupied
longer than any other part of the city. Remnants
of its military past, including barracks, can be seen
everywhere, and there are 24 miles (39 km) of
hiking trails, cycle paths, and beaches. A free
shuttle operates within the park, stopping at 40
desti nations. Golden Gate Bridge crosses the bay
from the northwest corner of the Presidio.
Fort Point
This impressive brick fortress, now a
national historic site, guarded the Golden
Gate during the Civil War of 1861-5.
