the
Veterans Building
(both
by Arthur Brown, 1932); and
the oldest building in the Civic
Center, the
Bill Graham Civic
Auditorium
(John Galen
Howard, 1915).
Contemporary
Among the city's contemporary
projects are the
Yerba Buena
Center for the Arts
by Fumihiko
Maki (1993), the
Museum of
Modern Art
by Mario Botta
(1994), and Daniel Libeskind's
Contemporary Jewish
Museum
(1994). The
SFJAZZ
Center
by Mark Cavagnero
Associates (2013) is a
remarkable transparent
structure with flexible seating.
Commercial
Two early office buildings that
are of architectural significance
are Willis Polk's
Hallidie
Building
(1917), the world's
first glass-curtain-walled
structure, and his stately
Merchant's Exchange
(1906).
Timothy Pflueger's building
at
450 Sutter Street
(1929) is a
shining example of Art Deco
design. Its lobby is beautifully
detailed with red marble and
embossed aluminum.
The
Union Square Frank
Lloyd Wright Building
(Xanadu
Gallery) was designed in 1949 by
Wright. The interior spirals up to
a mezzanine, while the façade is
broken by an arched, tunnel-like
entrance. The 853-ft (256-m)
Transamerica Pyramid
(William
Pereira, 1972) is also a notable
piece of commercial architecture.
Beaux Arts-style Palace of Fine Arts
Beaux Arts
The rigorously Neo-Classical style
of the Parisian
Ecole des Beaux
Arts
was favored by designers in
San Francisco for major buildings
following the 1906 earthquake.
Opulent colonnades, sculptures
and pediments are typical of
this lavish style, which was
readily adopted in a city eager
to signal to the world its
recovery from devastation.
The most perfect illustration
of Beaux Arts style in the city is
Bernard Maybeck's
Palace of
Fine Arts
, built as the focus of
the 1915 Panama-Pacific
Exposition, and acclaimed as the
city's most vibrant celebration of
the art of architecture.
Other impressive examples
surround Civic Center Plaza: the
City Hall
(Arthur Brown, 1915);
the old
Main Library
, now the
Asian Art Museum
(George
Kelham, 1915); the
War
Memorial Opera House
and
