Coins
Units of currency in the US are dollars and
cents. There are 100 cents to a dollar. Coins
come in $1, and 50-, 25-, 10-, 5-, and 1-cent
pieces. Goldtone $1 coins and State quarters
are also in circulation. Each coin has a
popular name: 1-cent pieces are called
pennies; 5-cent pieces, nickels; 10-cent pieces,
dimes; and 25-cent pieces, quarters.

Bank Notes (Bills)
American bank notes come in $1, $5, $10,
$20, $50, and $100 denominations. They
are all the same color, but each features a
different US President. The $20 and $50 bills
in circulation have extra security features.
Paper bills were first issued in 1862, when
coins were in short supply and the Civil
War needed financing.
