In-Depth Information
San Francisco Time
San Francisco is in the Pacific
Time Zone. Daylight Saving
Time (when clocks are set ahead
1 hour) begins on the second
Sunday in March and ends on
the first Sunday in November.
San Francisco is 3 hours behind
New York, 8 hours behind
London, and 18 hours
behind Sydney.
Responsible Tourism
San Francisco and the Bay Area
are on the cutting edge of all
things green in the US. The area
boasts a number of eco-lodges
and hotels, most of which are
members of the Green Hotel
Association . The organic food
movement is huge in Northern
California: a good number of
restaurants will list which local
farm their ingredients come
from, and there are weekly
farmers' markets throughout
the area. One of the best is the
Ferry Building Market Place ,
where local growers sell
everything from fresh produce
to delicious prepared foods.
Large tracts of open space in
the city - including the Presidio,
Golden Gate Park, Marin
Headlands, and Muir Woods -
have been set aside for
preservation, and San Francisco
also features several eco-friendly
buildings, such as the California
Academy of Sciences (see
pp152-3) .
To find businesses that
operate an environmentally
sustainable policy, visit the
website of the Bay Area Green
Business Program .
Electricity
Electric current in the US flows
at a standard 110-120 volts AC
(alternating current). Visitors
from abroad will need a voltage
converter and an adaptor plug.
Some hotels hand out adaptors
at the front desk, but it is also
possible to purchase them at
the airport. Special plugs for
electric shavers carry either
110- or 220-volt current.
