Outdoor Fun
The most exciting way to take
children around town is on the
cable cars (see pp284-5) . For a
thrilling descent, ride the last
leg of the Powell-Hyde line to
Aquatic Park (see pp174-5) , then
take the nearby ferry to Alcatraz
Island (see pp84-7) .
In Golden Gate Park (see
pp144-59) there are riding
stables, bike trails, boating
lakes, a carousel in the Children's
Playground, and even a herd
of bison. In the South Bay,
Great America is a theme
park with 100 acres (40 ha)
of rides and shows.
Indoor Fun
Slightly older children can
burn off their excess energy
at Mission Cliffs , an enormous
indoor rock-climbing gym.
For creative fun, try the
Exploratium for interesting,
hands-on exhibits. The
Children's Creativity Museum
is a must for kids of all ages.
AcroSports is a huge acrobatic
arena that caters to both kids
and adults. Check out the
interactive Circus Workshop,
book a private lesson in
contortion or tumbling,
or simply catch a show.
