In-Depth Information
Tennis
There are good tennis courts in
almost all of the city's public
parks, with the largest group
in Golden Gate Park. All city
courts have been renovated,
and many have lights for night
games. They are all operated
by the City of San Francisco
Recreation and Parks
Department . For details, phone
their information line. The Bay
Club SF Tennis has 24 indoor
and outdoor courts and offers
private and group lessons.
Guests staying at the famed
Claremont Resort, Spa and
Tennis Club (see p165) can have
lessons and play tennis to their
heart's content.
swim in the bay. There are also
two swimming clubs at Aquatic
Park (see pp174-5), the Dolphin
Club and the South End
Rowing Club . If you are in San
Francisco over the New Year,
watch the New Year's Day
sponsored swim organizedby
these two clubs for their
members (see p53) .
when the traffic is
comparatively quiet, riding
along the Embarcadero and
the Golden Gate Promenade
gives great views of the bay.
The Presidio and Golden
Gate Park area is also ideal
for cycling, and where
mostrental shops are, including
Stow Lake Bike Rentals . In
North Beach, Blazing Saddles
rents bikes.
In the Wine Country
(see pp192-5), you can take
advantage of the tours orga-
nized by Backroads Bicycle
Tours . Many are multi-day
tours through Napa and
Sonoma counties as well as
through Alexander Valley.
Bicycling
Cycling up and down San
Francisco's steep hills may
not seem like a sensible idea,
but if you plan your route well
a bike can be the best way
to appreciate the city.
