In-Depth Information
Light Meals and Snacks
If you do not have the time to sit down for a full meal, you
can get a quick bite to eat almost anywhere in San Francisco.
Many establishments serve good fast food at low prices, but
if you look for them, you can find places that offer
something a little special.
offers two dozen different
burgers, all of which are named
after local celebrities, while
Sparky's
near the Castro serves
up juicy burgers 24 hours a day.
Pizzerias
San Francisco has many good
pizzerias, mostly in North Beach.
Choose between the traditional
Tommaso's
, the popular
North
Beach Pizza
, and the hectic, but
excellent,
Golden Boy
. For a
really exotic pizza, try
Pauline's
in the Mission District or the
chain pizzeria
Extreme Pizza
in
Pacific Heights.
Breakfast
Coffee and pastries, or bacon
and eggs are easy to find in San
Francisco, or you can have a full
American breakfast that will
sustain you all day.
Sears Fine
Foods
in Union Square is an
institution, popular for its
wonderful early morning meals.
Le Petit Café
serves great
brunches on weekends. Hotel
dining rooms offer good
breakfasts, as do a few
restaurants
(see pp222-9).
Civic Center,
Miller's East
Coast Deli
in Russian Hill, and
Molinari's
in North Beach
are also worth a visit. The
Real Food Deli/Grocery
, also
in Russian Hill, specializes in
organic food.
Hamburger Places
While you can get a quick
hamburger and fries at all of the
usual franchises, you would do
better to try one of San
Francisco's more unique places.
The
Grubstake
, housed in a
converted streetcar, is open late,
Mel's Drive-In
is a 1950s-style
café, and
Louis'
has unbeatable
views over the remains of the
Sutro Baths
(see p159)
.
Bill's
Place
in the Richmond District
Mexican Food
Mexican food, which is tasty
and often extremely
inexpensive, is sold by vendors
all over the city. For a delicious
snack, try
El Farolito
,
Pancho
Villa
,
Roosevelt's Tamale Parlor
,
or
El Metate
. For a treat before
or after a movie, try
El Super
Burrito
- great prices and
large portions.
Delis
If you want a perfect corned
beef on rye sandwich try
David's
, the largest and most
central delicatessen in San
Francisco.
