Getting Around
Most visitors will want to explore the region by car.
Roads are good, and service stations and
accommodations are plentiful. All destinations are also
accessible by Greyhound bus (see p278) . Organized bus
tours (see p267) can be arranged from San Francisco to
the Wine Country, allowing visitors to take advantage of
the many wine-tasting opportunities. Gambler Specials
are an inexpensive way of getting to Lake Tahoe by
bus, and most offer special package deals on
hotels as well. A quicker, but more expensive,
alternative is to fly to Reno, Nevada,
or South Lake Tahoe. Yosemite
is accessible by train from
Oakland to Merced, with bus
connections included.
