nine-story-tall mural rising
above a riot of roses, lettuce,
and daisies. Now head for
the Society of California
Pioneers Museum 9 on Fourth
Street, which was founded in
1850 and is now home to both
a museum and library. Here
you will find many fine
paintings of 19th-century
Yosemite National Park (see
pp202-205) , the Sierra Nevada,
and other early landscapes,
featured along with Gold Rush
artifacts and hundreds of
daguerreotypes and photos.
Turn left on Howard Street,
then take a right on
Fifth Street. On the
corner of Mission Street,
you will see the magnificent
façade of the “Granite Lady,”
the Greek Revival-style Old
United States Mint 0 (see p119) ,
erected in 1869-74 to make
coins from California gold and
Nevada silver.

Tips for Walkers
Starting point: St. Patrick's
Church on Mission Street between
3rd and 4th Streets.
Distance: 0.5 mile (0.8 km).
Getting there: On BART, and on
MUNI Metro lines F, J, K, L, M, N
and T exit at Powell Street Station.
Stopping-off points: Food and
drink tends to be less expensive
here than around Union Square
and on the waterfront, but in
the glitzy hotels (W, the St. Regis,
and the Marriott) expect to pay
$5 for a cup of coffee. Enjoy a
great sandwich at The Grove
in Yerba Buena or have a
picnic in Yerba Buena Gardens.
Alternatively, head over to the
Metreon ( see p251) , which has a
good range of eateries and cafés.
KEY
Walk route
Memorial Waterfall to read
passages from King's “I Have a
Dream” speech. Leaving the
gardens, walk down Third Street
and turn right into Harrison
Street and right again toward
the intersection with Bonifacio
Street, where the Alice Street
Community Gardens 8 make
for another fascinating urban
experience. The proud senior
and disabled people from the
neighborhood who keep the
patch in bloom will be glad to
show you around. Look for the
7 Yerba Buena Gardens, an elegant and
restful space
