The Mission-style building at
homes. Follow Funston
Street along the length
of the hostel, and then
turn right at Franklin
Street. Here there are
several interesting
buildings, including the
exclusive Fort Mason
General's residence on
the left. Turn right by
the chapel to arrive at
the headquarters of the
Golden Gate National
Recreation Area (GGNRA) q .
The grassy knolls of Great
Meadow w extend westward
from here. This was where
refugees from the 1906
earthquake camped until they
could be re-housed. A statue
of Congressman Phillip Burton,
the inspiration behind the
formation of the GGNRA, has
been erected in the middle of
the field. From the Great
Meadow, take the narrow
steps down the hill to Fort
Mason Center (see pp74-5) .
Continue north toward the
piers e and stop in Building
D to visit the Mexican
Museum, or view the
Outdoor Exploratorium,
which illustrates the history
of the shoreline in that part
of the Bay and the area's
natural environment.

Tips for Walkers
Starting point: The seaward end
of Hyde Street Pier.
Length: 1.5 miles (2.5 km).
Getting there: The Powell-Hyde
cable car's northern terminus and
turntable at Beach Street is a
short walk from Hyde Street Pier.
Muni bus no. 19 goes to Beach
Street and Polk Street.
Stopping-off points: The Buena
Vista Café, opposite the cable car
turntable, is always packed with
customers who come for the
good breakfasts and strong
coffee (including a famous Irish
Coffee). Greens restaurant (see
p226) in Building A at Fort Mason
Center, considered to be San
Francisco's finest vegetarian
restaurant, is run by disciples of
Zen Buddhism. At the south end
of Building C, there is the Reader's
Café Bookstore featuring a
Thursday poetry series.

the top of the slope,

around to the front of
the Youth Hostel 0 .
This is one of the
few ornate wooden
houses open to the
public. Most of the
buildings date from
the 1850s and
today serve as

pumping station.
Fort Mason
West of Aquatic Park,
the Golden Gate
Promenade climbs
upward, rounding Black
Point and giving excellent
views of Alcatraz and Angel
Island. Above the pathway,
cypress trees cover the
headland, and a series of
terraces 9 hold the
Phillip Burton in Great
