FIVE GUIDED WALKS
These five walks take in much of the Bay
Area's intriguing cultural and geographical
diversity and sweeping views. The Aquatic
Park walk along the northern waterfront
covers the area from Hyde Street Pier (see
p83) , with its historic sailing ships and
echoes of the past, to Fort Mason Center (see
pp74-5) , a military relic transformed into a
lively community with theaters, museums
and arts activities. Only half an hour's drive
away, the Marin Headlands walk is into
another world, of rolling hills with cliffs
that drop dramatically into the sea. The third
walk moves to Berkeley (see p164) in the East
Bay to explore the groves of academe. The
city walk through Russian Hill takes you
through a warren of hidden parks and gardens,
or take in the atmosphere on a walk around
the SoMa District, with its trendy galleries,
shops, cafés, and glitzy hotels. In addition
to these walks, each of the eight areas of
San Francisco described in the Area by Area
section of this topic has a walk on its
Street-by-Street map.
