The main street in this chic
waterfront town is lined with
shops and restaurants housed
in “arks.” These are turn-of-the-
century houseboats that have
been pulled ashore, lined
up, and refurbished. They
now stand in what is
called “Ark Row.”
Less hectic than Sausalito,
Tiburon is a good town for
walking, with parks along the
scenic waterfront that offer a
place for contemplation.

Redwood Creek bubbles out
of Muir Woods and makes its
way down to the sea at Muir
Beach, a wide expanse of sand
popular with beachcombers
and picnickers. The road to the
beach passes the Pelican Inn.
This 16th-century-style English
inn is extremely proud of its
English menu, and its
welcoming hospitality.
The beach is likely to be
crowded on weekends, but
visitors who are prepared to
walk a mile or more are usually
rewarded with solitude.
In this small town that was once
a fishing community, Victorian
bungalows cling to steep hills
rising from the bay. Parallel to
the waterfront, Bridgeway
Avenue serves as a promenade
for the weekend crowds that
come to patronize the
restaurants and boutiques and
enjoy the views. Village Fair is
an eclectic assembly of shops
in an old warehouse. At 2100
Bridgeway, the Bay Model
simulates the movement of
the bay's tides and currents.

Angel Island is reached by
ferry from Tiburon and San
Francisco. Boats dock at Ayala
Cove with its sweeping lawn
and picnic tables.
Hiking trails loop
the wooded
island, rising to
776 ft (237 m)
above sea level,
and past an old
military garrison
that once housed
Asian immigrants.
During World War
II, prisoners of war
were detained
here. No motor
vehicles are
allowed here,
except for a few
park service vans.
Most visitors
prefer to cycle or
walk on the island.
Mount Tamalpais State Park is
a wilderness nature preserve
with trails that wind through
redwoods and alongside creeks.
There are picnic areas, campsites,
and meadows for kite flying.
Mount Tamalpais, at 2,571 ft
(784 m), is the highest peak in
the Bay Area; the rough tracks
gave rise to the invention of the
mountain bike. Near the summit,
the Mountain Theater is a natural
amphitheater where musicals
and plays are performed.
