In-Depth Information
FARTHER AFIELD
San Francisco is the smallest in size of
the nine counties that encircle the bay.
The settlements that were once summer
retreats are today sprawling suburbs or
cities in their own right. To the north
of Golden Gate Bridge, Marin County
has a wild, windswept coastline, forests
of redwoods, and Mount Tamalpais,
which offers magnificent views of the
Bay Area. Marin's settlements have
retained their village atmosphere,
and the county is the perfect escape
for visitors who want an afternoon
away from the metropolis. In the
East Bay, the most popular
destinations are Oakland's museum
and harbor, and Berkeley's gardens
and famous university. To the south,
San Francisco Zoo has plenty to
entertain younger sightseers.
