number of countries do so in representative samples of the general population. In this
context, Mansour (2009) reviewed the current status of POPs in Africa with respect to their
environmental distribution, stockpiles of some pesticidal POPs, and action plans of their
elimination in some African countries.
Recently, Porta et al. (2010) evaluated the distribution of serum concentrations of 19 POPs
and their main predictors in a representative sample (N = 919) of the general population
(18-74 years) of Catalonia, Spain. Through multivariate statistical models, the authors inves-
tigated the influence of sex, age, body mass index (BMI), socioeconomic status, and gen-
der on serum POP concentrations. The following compounds were detected in more than
85% of the subjects: p,p′-DDT, p,p′-DDE, PCB congeners (118, 138, 153 and 180), HCB, and
β-HCH. p,p′-DDE, HCB, and β-HCH showed the highest concentrations (median = 399.3,
159.4, and 91.9 ng/g lipid, respectively; Table 15.7). Distributions were highly skewed and
