14.7 Conclusions
Monitoring of wildlife for pesticide residues provides data that can be used in risk
assessments and to reduce sublethal contamination and mortality in nontarget species.
Most studies are devoted to OC pesticide residues and, overall, a decline in the envi-
ronmental levels has been observed, although it was most evident during the 1970s and
1980s and less dramatic thereafter. Endosulfan and HCHs can be an exception, and their
temporal trends deserve more attention in the future. In order to compare better results,
the use of concentrations based on LW is suggested. Many predators and scavengers
are declining in numbers, and exposure to SGARs might therefore be of importance
in conservation biology, and more studies are needed. Other areas such as herbicides,
fungicides other than HCB, and acaricides are less covered and merit probably more
attention by scientists.
