PIZZA AND PASTA
When Italians all over the country tell you that si mangia bene a Napoli (one eats well in
Naples) you know you're onto a good thing. Vying hard for Italy's culinary crown, the
city's loud and lusty streets serve up some of the nation's most famous flavours: coffee,
pizza, tomatoes, pasta, sfogliatelle (sweetened ricotta pastries), babĂ  (rum-soaked sponge
cake) and a panoply of seafood to be devoured every which way you can.
ANCIENT SITES
Living in the shadow of Mt Vesuvius, the Neapolitans abide by the motto, carpe diem
(seize the day). And why not? All around them, at Pompeii, Ercolano, Pozzuoli, Baia and
Cuma, they are reminded that life is short and unpredictable. Even beneath the city you'll
find reminders of long-lost lives, from ghostly Roman markets and theatres, to funerary
frescoes and venerated skulls.
