Petrol stations located along the main highways are open 24 hours. In smaller towns, the
opening hours are generally 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday with a lunchtime break. At
the time of writing the cost of
benzina senza piombo
(unleaded petrol) and
gasoil
(diesel)
was €1.825 and €1.725 per litre.
An increasing number of petrol stations are self-service. At these, simply key in the
number of the pump, the amount you require and then insert the necessary bill (only ac-
ceptable in denominations of €5, €10, €20 and €50).
If you run into mechanical problems, the nearest petrol station should be able to advise
a reliable mechanic, although few have workshops on-site and they are, overall, very poor
at stocking car parts. If you are driving a hire car and run into any serious problems, your
car-hire company will probably have an emergency tow service with a toll-free call. You
will need to report which road you are on, which direction you are heading, the make of
car and your license plate number

» If hiring a car, expect to pay around €60 per day for an economy car or a scooter. Pre-
booking via the internet often costs less than hiring a car in Italy.
» Renters must generally be aged 25 years or over, with a credit card and home country
driving licence or IDP.
» Consider hiring a small car, which will reduce your fuel expense and help you negotiate
narrow city lanes and tight parking spaces.
» Check with your credit-card company to see if it offers a Collision Damage Waiver,
which covers you for additional damage if you use that card to pay for the car.
