In-Depth Information
The weather in March is capricious: sunny, rainy and windy all at once. The official
start of Spring is 21 March, but things only really start to open up for the main sea-
son during Easter week.
SETTIMANA SANTA
Processions and passion plays mark Easter Holy Week across the Campania region. On
Good Friday and the Thursday preceding it, hooded penitents walk through the streets of
Sorrento. On Procida, Good Friday sees wooden statues and life-size tableaux carted
across the island.
May
The month of roses and early summer produce makes May a perfect time to travel,
especially for walkers. The weather is warm but not too hot and prices are good
value. It's also patron saint season.
FESTA DI SAN GENNARO
Naples' patron saint day sees the faithful flock to the Duomo to see San Gennaro's blood
liquefy. If it does, the city is deemed safe from volcanic catastrophe. Repeat performances
take place on 19 September and 16 December.
MAGGIO DEI MONUMENTI
As the weather warms up, Naples puts on a mammoth, month-long program of art exhibi-
tions, concerts, performances and tours in Naples. Many architectural and historical treas-
ures usually off-limits to the public are open and free to visit.
June
The summer season kicks off in June. The temperature cranks up quickly, lidis
(beaches) start to open in earnest and some of the big summer festivals commence.
The Anniversary of the Republic, on 2 June, is a national holiday.
