An Amalfi landmark, the Santa Caterina is one of Italy's
most famous hotels. Everything about the place oozes luxury, from the discreet service to
the fabulous gardens, the private beach to the opulent rooms. Built in 1880 by the Gam-
bardella family and now run by the third generation, the views are among the best on the
coast. For honeymooners, the Romeo and Juliet suite is the one to go for, a private chalet
in the colourful grounds - it's a snip at anywhere between €940 and €2800 per night.

A family-run small hotel with just six rooms,
daughter Daniella speaks excellent English. Call ahead if you are carrying heavy luggage
as it's a seriously puff-you-out-climb to reach here and a luggage service is included in the
price. The rooms are prettily furnished with antiques, majolica tiles and the odd chintzy
cherub, and they are light and sunny; room two is a particular winner with its French win-
dows and stunning views.
Ravello
Ravello is an upmarket town and the accommodation reflects this, both in style and price.
There are some superb top-end hotels, several lovely midrange places and a fine

nearby. Book well ahead for summer - especially if you're planning to visit during
the music festival.

is located a tough half-hour walk of
about 1.5km from Ravello's centre (call ahead and the owners can arrange to pick you
up). It is especially suited to families: children can feed the pony while you sit back and
admire the views - or for those who simply want to escape the crowds. The three rooms
are comfy but basic, the food is fabulous and the owner is a charming, garrulous host.
Half-board is also available.
