wonderfully cool in the height of summer. Rooms have lashings of white linen, satin bed-
heads, elegant Florentine-style furniture and terraces with deckchairs for contemplating
that view. The restaurant comes highly recommended.

Surrounded by lush gardens with a vegetable plot, this Praiano hotel has an old-
fashioned charm with its slightly stuffy furniture in the public areas and large, cool but
fairly bare rooms. The appeal lies in the fabulous views from the spacious flower-fes-
tooned terrace, the delightful pool surrounded by greenery, the affectionate resident tabby
cat (Lily) and the tranquil surroundings, on this narrow lane that leads to the Spiaggia
della Gavitelli. The (signposted) hotel is accessed via Via Rezzolo from the SS163 that
runs through town.

Amalfi
Despite its reputation as a day-trip destination, Amalfi has plenty of accommodation. It's
not especially cheap, though, and most hotels are in the midrange to upper price brackets.
Always try to book ahead, as the summer months are very busy and many places close
over winter. Note that if you're coming by car, consider a hotel with a car park, as finding
on-street parking could lead to an attack of the vapours.

Family run, this old-fashioned hotel has real character. The
spacious rooms have an air of gentility, with their appealingly haphazard decor, vintage
tiles and fine antiques. Surprisingly, some, such as room 31, even have Jacuzzi bathtubs;
others, room 42 among them, have sea views and a large balcony. Breakfast is laid out,
unusually, on top of a grand piano. It's all part of the very special character here. Highly
recommended.
