For such a talked-about hotel, the San Pietro is remarkably discreet.
Built into a rocky headland 2km east of Positano, it's almost entirely below road level - if
driving, look for an ivy clad chapel and a black British telephone box by the side of the
road. Once safely ensconced, you probably won't want to leave. All of the individually
decorated rooms have spectacular sea views, a private terrace and Jacuzzi. Other facilities
include a semicircular swimming pool, Michelin-starred restaurant, and a private beach
(accessible by lift) with an adjacent lawn with sunbeds, plus tennis court. The vast lobby
is a suitably swish introduction and draped with brilliantly coloured bougainvillea - an
unusual decor touch. There's a 24-hour complimentary shuttle service to Positano.

This Hotel California is a long way from the West Coast
(and the elderly owners don't look like Eagles fans). Housed in a magnificent 18th-cen-
tury palace with a facade washed in soothing pinks and yellows, the rooms in the older
part of the house are magnificent with ceilings painted with original friezes. The new
rooms are spacious and luxuriously decorated. Breakfast is served on a leafy front terrace.

First of
all, a warning: Celeste's home-made
limoncello
(which she will ply you with at any op-
portunity) has more alcohol in it than most. In her 80s, she's a gem, and also makes all the
breakfast preserves and cakes. Son Marco is behind the tasteful restoration of the 17th-
century rooms (when he is not running his Fornillo beach bar), which are attractively fur-
nished with bright tile work and dark-wood furniture. Go for room five with its atmo-
spheric vaulted ceiling.
