In-Depth Information
THE AMALFI COAST
Sorrento
Accommodation is thick on the ground in this town, although if you're arriving in high
summer (July and August), you'll still need to book ahead. Most of the big city-centre ho-
tels are geared towards package tourism and prices are correspondingly high. There are,
however, some excellent choices, particularly on Via Capo, the coastal road west of the
centre. This area is within walking distance of the city centre, but if you're carrying lug-
gage it's easier to catch a SITA bus for Sant'Agata or Massa Lubrense.

six-person dorms here) the remaining rooms are about as far from a backpackers pad as a
hiking boot from a stiletto: they are vast and plush with Regency-style fabrics, marble
floors, and large bathrooms with tubs and contemporary colour schemes. Facilities include
an adjacent Wellness Centre where guests can use the pool for a paltry €5, as well as enjoy
free fitness sessions and reasonably priced treatments.

Sorrento oozes belle-epoque elegance. Huge potted palms adorn gilded public rooms awash
with sunlight and antique furniture. Guest rooms vary in size and style, ranging from taste-
ful simplicity to extravagant, frescoed opulence. All, however, have views, either of the
hotel's lush gardens dripping with crimson bougainvillea or over the sea to Mt Vesuvius.
Past guests have included Pavarotti, Wagner, Goethe, Sophia Loren and British royalty.
