Il Ciclope
( 0974 93 03 18; www.ilciclope.com ; Marina di Camerota) While the Cilento region
may not be well known to your average tourist, it is definitely on the global hit parade
when it comes to DJ hotspots. Pete Tong, Tommy Vee, Marco Carola, David Morales…all
the big names are elbowing for the chance to spin discs at Il Ciclope, which occupies four
limestone caves and is one of the hippest places to strut your stuff this side of Ibiza.
It's high on the chic-o-meter, look sharp and be the most fashionable cave gal (or guy)
since the Flintstones.
CLUB
Palinuro
POP 4800
Despite being hailed as the Cilento coast's main resort, Palinuro remains relatively low-
key (and low-rise), with a tangible fishing-village feel. Located in a picturesque bay
sheltered by a promontory, and with superb beaches, it gets crowded with Italian holiday-
makers in August. Note that the majority of hotels and restaurants are seasonal and are
only open from Easter to October.
Sights & Activities
Aside from the grottoes, Palinuro is famous for its beaches. For a quiet cove, head south
of town to Spiaggia Marmelli, surrounded by lush banks of greenery. The beach is ap-
proached via steep steps, and there's a small car park at the top. The town's main beach is
Spiaggia Palinuro , which stretches for around 4km north of the centre. Palinuro's
postcard-pretty harbour has colourful fishing boats, several bars and a wide swathe of
sand.
The epicentre of town is the Piazza Virgilio, with its modern octagonal church (which
looks transplanted from Salt Lake City), and main street Via Indipendenza, which is good
for shopping and light eats.
