There's an earthy southern Italian atmosphere here, with its outside terrace surrounded by
historic houses decorated with washing hung out to dry. Choices are more innovative than
you would expect and include seafood dishes, such as squid with porcini mushrooms or
cuttlefish accompanied by creamed vegetables. The white-truffle ice cream makes a sexy,
sweet finale. The owners run the adjacent B&B.
CAMPANIAN
Cicirinella €€

( 089 22 65 61; Via Genovesi 28; meals €25) This place has that winning combination
of an earthy and inviting atmosphere and unfailingly good, delicately composed dishes.
Exposed stone, shelves of wine and an open-plan kitchen set the scene for enjoying tradi-
tional Campanian cuisine like pasta with seafood and chickpeas, or a mussel soup that
tastes satisfyingly of the sea.
SWEET TREAT
Look for torta ricotta e pera (ricotta and pear tart), a speciality in Salerno and sold throughout the Ci-
lento region. Just about every pasticceria (pastry shop) sells this delicious sweet and fruity delicacy - al-
though it is the locals' favourite as well, so they tend to sell out fast.
