archaeological museum has been closed for restoration for several years now with no ap-
proximate opening date available. Check at the tourist office before turning up here. If it is
open, don't miss the highlight: a 1st-century-BC bronze head of Apollo, discovered in the
Gulf of Salerno in 1930. One can only wonder what else lies buried in the surrounding
seabed.

Head to Via Roma in the lively medieval centre, where you'll find everything from tradi-
tional, family-run trattorias and gelaterias to jazzy wine bars, pubs and expensive restaur-
ants. In summer, the wide seafront promenade is a popular place for the evening passeg-
giata (stroll).

II. Eating here is like eating at your grandma's house when everything was simpler yet the
taste was still spot on. The menu changes daily but the emphasis is on vegetable dishes
like white beans with chicory, noodles and turnip tops, and ravioli stuffed with cheese and
topped with a spinach-pesto sauce. The interior has a rural trattoria feel and there's an out-
side terrace for al fresco dining.
