Festivals & Events
TUNA FESTIVAL
Sagra del Tonno
Each year, in late July or early August, the village celebrates sagra del tonno, a festival
dedicated to tuna and anchovies. If you can time your visit accordingly, there are plenty of
opportunities for tasting, as well as music and other general festivities. Further details are
available from the tourist office.
If you miss the festival, no worries, you can pick up a jar (never a tin) of the fishy spe-
cialities, preserved in olive oil, at local food shops and delis.
Vietri sul Mare
POP 8600
Marking the end of Amalfi's coastal road, Vietri sul Mare is the ceramics capital of Cam-
pania. Production dates back to Roman times but it took off on an industrial scale in the
16th and 17th centuries with the development of high, three-level furnaces. The unmistak-
able local style - bold brush strokes and strong Mediterranean colours - found favour in
the royal court of Naples, which became one of Vietri's major clients. Later, in the 1920s
and '30s, an influx of international artists (mainly Germans) led to a shake-up of tradition-
al designs. There's a moderately helpful Tourist Office ( 089 21 12 85; Piazza Mat-
teotti; 10am-1pm & 5-8pm Mon-Fri, 10am-1pm Sat) near the entrance to the centro
storico which is packed with decorative tiled-front shops selling ceramic wares of every
description.
Museo della Ceramica
( 089 21 18 35; Villa Guerriglia; 8am-3pm Tue-Sat, 9am-1pm Sun) For
more on Vietri's ceramics past, head to this museum in the nearby village of Raito.
Housed in a lovely villa surrounded by a park, the museum has a comprehensive collec-
