If
you are intent on going for a swim, you're better off hiring a boat and heading out to sea.
You'll find a number of operators along Lungomare dei Cavalieri, including this place run
by American local resident Rebecca Brooks. You can hire a boat without a skipper from
€250 per day (per boat, maximum six passengers). There are also organised daylong ex-
cursions along the coast and to the islands (from €45 per person).

Eating & Drinking
Inevitably, most of the restaurants in and around Amalfi's centre cater to the tourist trade.
Standards are generally high, however, and it's rare to eat badly. Most places serve pizza
and a range of pasta, grilled meat and seafood. The Amalfi drinking scene is fairly sub-
dued, revolving around streetside cafes and bars. It gets a tad more boisterous in Atrani,
but is hardly hard-core.

Run by the third generation of the same family, patron-
ised primarily by locals and fronting the beach, this restaurant serves fish so fresh it is al-
most flapping. Consider the tasting menu (€48) with dishes like warm seafood salad and
linguini alla scoglia
(calamari, prawns, scampi, shellfish and cherry tomatoes). And it
gets better… Marina Grande is a member of the Slow Food Movement and uses almost
exclusively organic produce. Reservations are recommended.

Located under the arches, this
place is run by celebrated pastry chef Tiziano Mita, who has worked in Paris and Milan
and at the revered Palazzo Sasso in Ravello. Mita applies a contemporary twist to tradi-
tional sweet treats, like
sfogliatella
in the form of a
trullo
(conical roofed building unique
to Puglia). Olive-oil biscuits, almond pastries and lemon cream cake are similarly delicate
and delicious. They also do coffee and have a couple of tables outside.
